Tony Batchelder was our first patient to undergo one-day hip replacement surgery at Barlborough NHS Treatment Centre. He said: “I would prefer to avoid staying in hospital if I can, and I think anyone would feel more relaxed and comfortable in their own home”.
On the day of his surgery, Tony arrived at the treatment centre at 6am and was in theatre around 9am. Tony said: “Everything went smoothly and the surgery took just 55 minutes. I was back on the ward shortly after, and on my feet with the physiotherapist by 12.30pm.”
After working with the physiotherapist, by 7pm Tony was ready to be collected by his partner to begin his recovery. Before his surgery he was given all of the equipment needed to recuperate at home, as well as plenty of medication and a 24/7 telephone number for medical support on the ward.
Tony was back at work seven weeks later and said“I was very pleased with how it went. The team at the centre were very good from start to finish.”
During your pre-operative assessment, your consultant will evaluate your suitability for a one-day hip or knee replacement, we appreciate not everyone will want to be a day case replacement patient. This is for those patients who wish to follow the day case replacement pathway.
A patients’ age is not a critical factor during selection, but rather whether they’re in good health, have suitable family support and are motivated to work at their recovery.
If deemed fit for surgery, you will be seen by our assessment team and given all the relevant information to help you prepare for your surgery as well as our 24/7 helpline number for instant access to medical support during your recovery.
On the morning of your surgery you will arrive at Barlborough hospital, have your surgery performed in one of our theatres, then recover on our ward.
You would then work with one of our physiotherapists, before returning home to begin your recovery. If for any reason you feel not ready for same day discharge you can continue your recovery through our regular in-patient pathway.
The following morning, a nurse will contact you to discuss pain control as well as how you slept.
Your consultant and anaesthetist will decide on your eligibility. If you would like to know more, please speak to a member of the team during your assessment.
